Inquest Date into the Death of Emmanuel Oruitemeka Announced

Dr. Michael Wilson, Regional Supervising Coroner for North Region, Thunder Bay Office, announced today that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Emmanuel Oruitemeka.

Mr. Oruitemeka, 25, died in hospital on February 16, 2014, after collapsing while in police custody four days earlier. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.  

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Oruitemeka's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.

The inquest is expected to last four days and hear from approximately 13 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2019, at the Thunder Bay Courthouse, 125 Brodie St.  Dr. Bob Reddoch will preside as inquest coroner and Robert Kozak will be counsel to the coroner.
