Statement From Minister Duguid On Toyota's 25th Anniversary
Minister of Economic Development and Innovation Brad Duguid issued the following statement marking the 25th anniversary of Toyota building vehicles in Ontario.
"Congratulations to Toyota on its 25th anniversary of building vehicles in Ontario.
Toyota employs about 6,500 people at its Cambridge and Woodstock plants. The company has invested approximately $5.6 billion in its Ontario operations, and has built more than four million vehicles in the province.
The company is an essential part of Ontario's auto industry, and a big reason why the province continues to be the leading jurisdiction in all of North America for vehicle assembly.
Ontario's skilled workforce, accomplished industry supply chain, and strong R&D capabilities are among the many reasons why Toyota is among five of the world's major car companies that have made this province a mainstay of their North American production.
Recently, Toyota chose Ontario to produce its RAV4 electric vehicle supporting the McGuinty government's commitment to electric vehicles and creating the jobs of the future. This helps position Ontario towards becoming the world-leading clean energy and manufacturing economy in the face of global economic uncertainty.
We thank Toyota for the confidence it has shown in Ontario and its auto workers, and the huge contribution the company makes to creating good jobs for Ontario families and building strong communities.
The McGuinty government is proud of its longstanding and productive partnership with Toyota and we look forward to building on that relationship in the years ahead."
