Shopify Creates Jobs in Kitchener-Waterloo
Ontario Applauds Expansion of Home Grown Tech Success Story
Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure Brad Duguid was in Kitchener-Waterloo today to congratulate Shopify on creating 300 new jobs in Ontario.
Shopify announced it will open a new office in Kitchener-Waterloo.
Shopify helps entrepreneurs sell their products across multiple sales channels including web, mobile, social media such as Pinterest and Facebook, brick-and-mortar locations and pop-up shops. It is now among the fastest growing technology companies in North America, supporting over 175,000 stores worldwide and has reached "Unicorn" status with a valuation over a billion dollars.
Ontario helped support Shopify's growth through the Ontario Venture Capital Fund. The investment helped the company access the capital needed to expand into global markets. Their expansion is moving ahead without additional government support, and is evidence of the productive, high-growth environment that enables start-ups and established companies to grow and thrive in Ontario.
Strategically investing in local companies and partnering to create high-quality and well-paying jobs is part of the government's plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan includes investing in people's talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan.
- Shopify was named Canadian Innovation Exchange’s (CIX) Innovator of the Year for 2015.
- The company is hosting its sixth annual Build a Business competition.
- Ontario ranks second in North America in terms of the total number of information and communication technology establishments.
- Ontario has programs to help start-up ventures to grow and compete on a global scale including: the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs, Northleaf Venture Catalyst Fund, the Ontario Venture Capital Fund, the Investment Accelerator Fund and the Angel Network Program.

Our government is so proud that Shopify has chosen to open its second office in Kitchener-Waterloo as they scale-up their ventures. This is a wonderful example of how Ontario’s innovation culture is truly creating the jobs and economy of tomorrow.”
“We chose Waterloo because of the amazing talent pool, start-up culture and tech history of the region. We're a proud Canadian company and want to expand and invest in the community.”
