Minister's Statement on the Release of Ontario's Burden Reduction Report

Ministry of Economic Development and Growth

Today, Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment, released the following statement on Ontario's Burden Reduction report:

"We've come a long way in five years of reducing the burden on business. We are proud to be working with leading national and provincial sector associations to address red tape to continue creating new jobs and economic opportunities here in Ontario. We are pleased by our Red Tape Report Card grade this year, from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, and are proud of the work we have done to cut red tape and help Ontario's businesses prosper.

We have maintained our 'B' rating as a Canadian leader in the reduction of unnecessary regulatory requirements. We are committed to helping businesses grow, invest and create jobs. That means providing faster, smarter and more streamlined government services to businesses, and collaborating with the CFIB to continually find new ways to reduce unnecessary red tape.

Our new report on red tape reduction: Fewer Burdens, Greater Growth measures the benefits of reducing burdens on business in 2013. It highlights Ontario's initiatives that can save Ontario businesses millions of dollars.

Ontario's Business Info Line that provides one-stop service referrals is just one example. This hotline is helping companies find what they need without having to spend time and money navigating multiple ministries. It receives over 1,800 calls per week. Last year businesses saved more than $1 million by finding relevant information or the right government official faster.

Fewer Burdens, Greater Growth builds on the work of Ontario's Open for Business initiative to modernize government and reduce burdens. Since 2008, the province has eliminated 17 per cent of all regulatory requirements -- that's 80,000 regulatory burdens.

Ontario will continue to identify unnecessary burdens and we will reduce and eliminate them. We will regularly report on reduction initiatives that make a significant and measurable difference. Our province is one of the few places in the world to measure and report on the time and financial savings for businesses when specific government burdens are reduced.

I am proud of the work we are doing with business leaders and other stakeholders to help position Ontario as a global leader in reducing barriers to business. Together we are building a stronger economy and a brighter future for the people of Ontario."
