Ontario Promoting Entrepreneurship Among Youth

Expanded Program Helps Students Learn Business Skills

Ontario is helping high school students in the Simcoe region, and thousands more from across the province, learn about entrepreneurship and develop important business and work skills.

The High School Entrepreneurship Outreach program provides funding to not-for-profit organizations to help them deliver programming that gives high school students exposure to entrepreneurs and their small businesses.

The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka will receive $1 million through the program and will act as the administration and project management lead for 31 participating Ontario YMCA chapters. Through this funding, participating YMCAs will host workshops, business competitions, guest speakers and other activities to help spark an interest in entrepreneurship and present it as a viable career option to youth.

The High School Entrepreneurship Outreach Program is part of Ontario's Youth Jobs Strategy, which has created more than 27,000 job opportunities for young people across the province since its launch in 2013.

Supporting young entrepreneurs is part of the government's plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan includes investing in people's talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan.

Quick Facts

  • To date, the High School Entrepreneurship Outreach program has helped 32 organizations connect with over 65,000 students across the province, including vulnerable youth and those living in high-need communities.
  • The province has invested approximately $4.6 million in funding for the program, with 22 organizations launching projects in March 2014, and an additional 10 launching projects in the 2014-2015 school year.
  • Ontario has renewed the Youth Jobs Strategy and is investing an additional $250 million over the next two years.
