Statement from the Minister of Government and Consumer Services on Enhancing Public Safety at TSSA
TORONTO — Today, Bill Walker, Minister of Government and Consumer Services, issued the following statement:
"Ontario's government is putting people at the centre of everything it does by strengthening consumer protection and ensuring public safety for Ontarians.
The Auditor General's 2018 report revealed serious safety concerns with operations at the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). Our government took these shocking findings very seriously. That is why I immediately directed TSSA to prepare an action plan to address the Auditor General's recommendations in a timely and responsive manner.
Today, I am pleased to report that TSSA has developed a plan to address the Auditor General's high safety risk recommendations within the next year. My office will monitor the implementation of this plan closely to ensure timelines and key milestones are met.
We have also taken significant steps to ensure the goals of the action plan are achieved.
On Friday, May 24, 2019, we asked TSSA's Board to hire a new Chief Safety and Risk Officer by July 1, 2019. This individual will conduct independent audits and reviews of TSSA's public safety activities on an ongoing basis.
I have also appointed a new Chair of the TSSA Board, Robert J. Falconi, who will help TSSA implement its plan to become a more modern and effective safety regulator. I thank the former chair, Norm Inkster, for his past leadership.
Our government will continue to work with TSSA to ensure its action plan is successfully implemented so we can enhance public safety for the people of Ontario."
