Students Have Their Say And Vote

Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing

To mark the 2010 municipal and school board elections, elementary and high school students across the province will cast ballots for their local mayor, councillor, and school trustee in the first ever province-wide municipal and school board election program run by Student Vote, in partnership with Local Government Week, and the Ontario government.

The Student Vote program occurs this year during Local Government Week, which runs from October 17 - 23, just prior to municipal and school board elections across the province.

Local Government Week provides the opportunity for students to learn about our municipal level of government.   Partnering with Student Vote this fall will help engage students in the local election process.

Student Vote

Student Vote is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that works with educators to engage young Canadians in the democratic process.   During official election periods, Student Vote provides a real-life parallel election experience for youth under the voting age to encourage voting habits that they can apply as adults.

Registered Schools

In the lead up to Student Vote, participating schools received complimentary campaign kits with resources, suggested learning activities, and electoral supplies.

During Local Government Week, schools are encouraged to host their own Student Vote Day, where students can cast ballots for local election candidates.  The results will be shared with local media after the official polls close on October 25.

Since 2003, over two million students across Canada have participated in Student Vote programs.

Local Government Week

Local Government Week is a school-focused campaign to celebrate the important role municipal governments play in shaping our communities.

It is a project of the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario, and is supported by both the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.

Local Government Week - Year Long Activities

Schools and municipalities are also encouraged to participate together in Local Government Week activities throughout the remaining school year after the launch week.  Visit Local Government Week for activity ideas, and Service Ontario for resources.
