Statement by Minister Rick Bartolucci on the Sixth Anniversary of Ontario's Greenbelt

Ministry of Municipal Affairs

Ontario's Greenbelt is six years old today.

Encompassing 1.8 million acres, our greenbelt is the largest in the world, spanning across the Greater Golden Horseshoe and extending to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula.  Boasting some of the best agricultural land in Canada, valuable natural resources and pristine environment, the Greenbelt is also home to vibrant rural communities engaged in diverse economic activities.

Many citizens, municipalities and community groups have been enthusiastic proponents for expanding the Greenbelt. These supporters recognize the Greenbelt as a source of healthy local food, recreational and tourism opportunities, and the protection it affords to our watersheds, streams and rivers.

The Greenbelt supports our Open Ontario plan to develop a prosperous sustainable economy that protects our environment and creates jobs.

We welcome requests from municipalities interested in growing the Greenbelt in their communities -- and invite you to join us in celebrating a greener future for Ontario.
