McGuinty Government Promotes Use Of Ontario Wood Products

Provincial support will help build a strong Northern economy

NORTH BAY - The McGuinty government is boosting the northern economy by supporting the Canadian Wood Council's WoodWORKS campaign to promote the use of wood in construction, Nipissing MPP Monique Smith announced today on behalf of Northern Development and Mines Minister and Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) Chair Rick Bartolucci.

"Promoting the use of wood in construction will help to ensure that northern communities that rely on the forestry industry continue to derive the maximum economic benefit from its activities," said Smith.

The province is investing $200,000 in the Ontario WoodWORKS project, which was developed to promote wood and value-added wood products as the first choice for building professionals, enhance technical expertise and training among construction industry professionals, accelerate innovation and product development, and undertake competitive studies on building materials.

"We are pleased that the Heritage Fund and Minister Bartolucci recognize the potential of the wood works project by making this contribution," said Jim Lopez, President, Forest Products Group, Tembec and Chair of Ontario WoodWORKS. "This public/private sector partnership is a tremendous opportunity to expand markets for both the primary and secondary manufacturing sectors of the forest products industry."

"The forestry industry is a major contributor to the northern economy," Bartolucci said. "Through support of this project, the McGuinty government is helping to build a strong and prosperous economy, one that will provide northerners with a quality of life that is second to none."

The McGuinty government is returning the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund to its original mandate of fostering private sector job creation. The NOHFC is working in partnership with the private sector and other levels of government to diversify the northern economy and stimulate job growth. It is an essential part of the government's commitment to delivering real, positive change across Northern Ontario.
