Province Invests in Opasatika Diversification Efforts

Former Sawmill Site Seen as Potential Industrial Incubator

SUDBURY - The Ontario government is helping the community of Opasatika explore the feasibility of converting a closed sawmill into an industrial incubator site, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"We are proud to support our northern communities in their efforts to sustain the economic and industrial activity necessary to keep them strong and thriving," said Bartolucci, who is also Chair of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).  "This investment reflects our commitment to helping northern communities succeed and attract new investments for long-term growth."

The NOHFC is providing $95,800 to assess the feasibility of converting Tembec's former Excel sawmill site in Opasatika into an industrial incubator. The study will focus on identifying potential environmental issues, assessing the integrity of the facility, and collecting permitting data and other information on biomass processing.

"While northern communities face unique challenges to economic growth, they also hold enormous potential for prosperity," added Bartolucci. "The McGuinty government is pleased to work with all its municipal partners in helping advance their economic diversification objectives."

Other McGuinty government initiatives in support of northern economic development include:

•        Improving northern highways by investing $1.8 billion over five years in highway expansions and improvements;

•    Providing $900 million over five years in assistance for the forestry industry;

•    Launching the GO North Investor Program to attract new investment to the North.

These initiatives are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
