Powassan Plans For Prosperity
Community Plan Will Help Drive Revitalization
SUDBURY - The Ontario government is helping the residents of Powassan plan for a more prosperous future by investing in a community development plan, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.
"We are on the side of northerners. That is why we are helping the people of Powassan explore new development opportunities that will revitalize the entire community," said Bartolucci, who also chairs the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). "Sound planning today can be a springboard to future prosperity."
The NOHFC is investing $20,000 towards a strategic development plan for the Municipality of Powassan. Improved planning will enable the municipality to identify new economic and community development opportunities and better allocate assets and resources.
Other McGuinty government initiatives for northerners include:
• A $1.8 billion investment, over the next five years, in upgraded and expanded northern highways;
• A $1 million contribution, through the NOHFC, to the Blue Sky Economic Growth Corporation to construct wireless, open-access broadband infrastructure in the districts of Nipissing, Parry Sound and Sudbury;
• A $12,500 payment to the Municipality of Powassan to study the feasibility of constructing, operating and maintaining a public observatory.
These initiatives are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
