Investment To Create Jobs In Echo Bay

ECHO BAY - A provincial investment in the expansion of a local building products manufacturer could create as many as 16 news jobs in this small North Shore community, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"We're on the side of northerners.  That's why we are working local businesses to build opportunity and prosperity in the North," said Bartolucci, who is also chair of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).  "Through investments such as this one, we are providing small communities like Echo Bay with new opportunities for economic development."

The NOHFC is providing $325,000 to help Maple Leaf Forest Products Inc. expand and upgrade its facility in Echo Bay.  The project involves construction of warehouse space, upgrading the showroom and retrofitting existing space to accommodate a new assembly plant facility.  The company manufactures building products such as doors, windows and flooring for the high end housing market.

"Ontario's forestry industry supports the economies of many northern communities," said Natural Resources Minister David Ramsay.  "This investment in our wood-products sector will help to create new opportunities for employment and expansion within the industry."

Other McGuinty government initiatives for northern business include:

•    Contributing $60 million this year to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and introducing new programs designed to support private sector investment and job creation in the North

•    Expanding the network of Small Business Enterprise Centres  to 53 locations throughout the province

•    Introducing a refundable apprenticeship training tax credit.

These initiatives are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
