Province Invests In Marathon Infrastructure
Ontario Government Supports Renovation Of Local Community Hall
THUNDER BAY - The provincial government is improving social, cultural and recreational activities for the residents of Marathon by investing in upgrades to the community hall in Marathon, Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Michael Gravelle announced today on behalf of Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci.
"Our help in renovating this local facility will ensure that the Marathon community continues to enjoy and benefit from this social and recreational centre," said Gravelle. "Sense of community is important to all of us, and by committing this funding to the hall; we are fostering that sense in Marathon."
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is providing $167,450 to renovate the Lakeview Community Hall, Marathon's main social and recreational facility. The hall is a multi-purpose building that supports numerous community groups and activities. Work will include structural and other renovations that will bring the facility up to current building standards.
"We are on the side of northerners," said Bartolucci, who is also chair of the NOHFC. "Our investment in this project firmly demonstrates our government's commitment to improving essential community infrastructure to promote continued economic growth throughout Northern Ontario."
Other McGuinty government initiatives in support of northern communities include:
• Investing $7.4 million to improve Highway 17 and Highway 614, near the Town of Marathon
• Ensuring quality drinking water in northern communities by investing more than $33 million since October 2003 toward upgrades to drinking water systems in the North.
These initiatives are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
