White River Drinking Water To Be Protected

McGuinty Government On The Side Of Northerners

SUDBURY - The Ontario government is ensuring residents of White River have access to clean, safe drinking water by investing in upgrades to the water treatment plant, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"Our government realizes the importance of maintaining small northern community infrastructure in peak working condition," said Bartolucci.  "Without this support, communities such as White River would not be able to undertake such projects important to their well being and economic prosperity."

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is providing an additional investment of $148,298 to the Township of White River for upgrades to the local water treatment plant.  The project, which will improve the water quality for approximately 460 households, will include the installation of filtration, electrical, heating and ventilation equipment.  In 2005, the NOHFC announced an investment of $552,713 to the project.

"I am very pleased that the NOHFC could support this local priority for the people of White River," said Bartolucci.  "With modern infrastructure, the community will be better positioned to take advantage of new business and job creation opportunities."

Other McGuinty government initiatives for northerners include:

•    Assistance of $900 million over five years for the forestry industry

•    Providing up to $25,000 through the Northern Ontario Young Entrepreneur Program to support business start-ups by young northerners

•    Opening the first Northern Ontario School of Medicine, to train doctors in the North, so they will practice in the North.

These projects are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
