Province Supports Tourism Venture North Of Red Lake
Heritage Fund Helps Tourism Camp Expand To Attract More Visitors
SUDBURY - The Ontario government is investing in the expansion of a tourist camp on Pine Island just north of Red Lake, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.
"We are on the side of northerners. We recognize the importance of supporting business opportunities across Northern Ontario," said Bartolucci, who also chairs the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). "Small businesses are the backbone of many of our northern communities as they help to create the wealth and economic prosperity that sustain many local jobs."
The NOHFC will provide $42,000 to Anglers Kingdom to expand operations by constructing two new winterized cabins. The new cabins will increase the camp's capacity and enable it to tap into the winter tourism industry to accommodate visitors seeking activities such as skiing and ice fishing.
"Global trends indicate travelers are seeking vacations that bring them closer to nature and the outdoors," said Bartolucci. "In Northern Ontario we have an abundance of forests and lakes, teeming with fish and wildlife that offer vast opportunities for growth."
Other McGuinty government initiatives for northern prosperity include:
• Providing up to $25,000 through the Northern Ontario Young Entrepreneur Program to support business start-ups by young northerner
• Maintaining a province-wide system of Ontario Travel Information Centres that provided tourism information to 1.8 million visitors last year
• Investing $14 million in tourism marketing and in sports, culture and tourism infrastructure initiatives in Northern Ontario.
These initiatives are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
