Young Timmins Entrepreneur Launches Business

Provincial Program Helps Youth Stay In The North

SUDBURY - The McGuinty government is supporting youth entrepreneurship in the Timmins area by investing in the start-up of a new plastering contracting business, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"Our government recognizes that small businesses are the mainstay of the economy of many northern communities," said Bartolucci.  "Through investments such as this one, we are helping young people build successful careers and ensuring the future prosperity of Northern Ontario."

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), through its Young Entrepreneur Program, is providing $25,000 to Pro Stucco Systems for the purchase of equipment.  This investment will help the owner-operator establish a residential and commercial stucco and plastering service for interior and exterior applications.

"Launching a new business can be a daunting challenge, especially for young budding entrepreneurs," said Bartolucci, who also chairs the NOHFC.  "Our funding is helping to put the dream of business ownership within the reach of young northerners and encouraging a new generation to build their future at home."

Other McGuinty government initiatives in support of northern prosperity include:

•    Investing more than $8 million to date, from the NOHFC, to provide internships and work placements to help some 447 young northerners launch their careers in the North

•    Providing $2.5 million to improve access to clean, safe drinking water in Timmins by investing in upgrades to four local water systems

•    Contributing $1.7 million to establish a network of virtual reality facilities in the North, including one which was recently launched at the Timmins Public Library.

These projects are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
