McGuinty Government On The Side Of Northerners

SUDBURY - The McGuinty government is supporting youth entrepreneurship in Northern Ontario by investing in the establishment of a marketing and design business at Goulais River, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"We are on the side of northerners. That's why we are helping our talented youth build careers here in the North," said Bartolucci. "This investment demonstrates our government's unwavering commitment to helping northern youth tap into the vast array of opportunities that exist in the North."

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is providing Paperclip Group with $22,000 through its Young Entrepreneur Program to help establish a marketing and product design business in Goulais River. The funding will be used to purchase computer equipment and office furniture necessary to the start-up of the business. Paperclip Group develops marketing strategies, branding and packaging designs for clients from across North America.

"Small businesses play an important role in sustaining the economies of many northern communities," said Bartolucci, who also chairs the NOHFC.  "By supporting projects such as this, we are helping diversify the local economy and creating new opportunities for our young people."

This initiative is just one way the McGuinty government is supporting northern youth. Others include:

•    Future Entrepreneurs - a program that nurtures an entrepreneurial mindset and teaches skills to students in Grades 7 and 8

•    Investing over $8 million to date, through the NOHFC, to provide internships and work placements to help some 470 young northerners launch their careers in the North

•    Providing more than $1.3 million over the last two years to support the start-up of 65 businesses by young northern entrepreneurs.

These initiatives are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan. It has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
