Government Helps Atikokan Entrepreneur Get Into The Game

New Internet And Computer Gaming Café Made Possible With Provincial Funding

SUDBURY - The McGuinty government is helping a young entrepreneur in Atikokan set up a computer gaming café as part of a government initiative to encourage northern enterprise by young people, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is an important catalyst for economic, community and infrastructure development in the North," said Bartolucci, who also chairs the NOHFC. "I am confident that the fund's recently improved programs will continue to help northerners develop new economic opportunities in their communities."

Under the NOHFC's Young Entrepreneur Program, Global Gaming of Atikokan will receive $25,000 to buy equipment to set up an Internet café and facility for playing, renting and buying computer games and for hosting tournaments.

"Young people keep our communities and our local economies connected to new ideas and new markets," said Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro. "I am pleased that our government is actively assisting young northern entrepreneurs."

Other McGuinty government initiatives for young people include:

•    Northern Ontario Youth Internship and Co-op Program, which helps provide on-the-job training and experience to youth in Northern Ontario. To date, more than $8.8 million has been invested to provide placements for 484 young people

•    The annual Ontario Secondary School Business Plan Competition, which gives Ontario high school students an opportunity to develop essential business skills by creating a business plan and competing with their peers throughout the province for awards of up to $2,500.

The NOHFC is an important component of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
