McGuinty Government On The Side Of Northerners

NORTH BAY - The McGuinty government is helping to grow North Bay's industrial sector by investing in the expansion of a rotary bit manufacturing facility in the city, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"We are extremely pleased to support the growth of this important local enterprise," said Bartolucci, who also chairs the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). "Our assistance will enable the company to increase production capacity for its domestic and international clients and, in doing so, create jobs for northerners."

The NOHFC, through its Enterprises North Job Creation Program, will provide $1.5 million to Rotacan, a manufacturer of rotary drill bits for the mining industry, to help it upgrade its facilities. Improvements will include the installation of a new heat treatment furnace and a metallurgical laboratory as well as other equipment, which will streamline operations. As a result of this investment, 15 jobs will be retained at Rotacan with the prospect for the creation of as many as 30 new jobs over the next three years.

"We are on the side of northerners. That's why we are helping northern manufacturers like Rotacan develop into important players in global markets," said Nipissing MPP Monique Smith "By supporting these kinds of initiatives, our government is promoting prosperity throughout Northern Ontario."

Other McGuinty government initiatives supporting the Nipissing region include:

•    Providing $1 million toward the cost of upgrading municipal services on Oak Street including sewer, water and electrical distribution systems

•    Investing $33,000 from the Northern Ontario Grow Bonds program to help Sani-Gear Inc., a company that cleans and repairs firefighting gear, purchase new equipment that will allow it to seek out larger contracts and create new jobs.

These initiatives are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The Northern Prosperity Plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
