Province Invests In Northwest Energy Conversion Project

Outfitter Uses Sun To Power Camps

SUDBURY - A Kenora area tourist outfitter is continuing the conversion of its camps on Oliver Lake and Wabikami Lake to solar power thanks to an additional investment from the Ontario government, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"Adopting renewable energy sources to power their operations enables off-the-grid outfitters to deliver a more environmentally friendly experience to their guests," said Bartolucci. "It's good for the environment and good for the bottom line."

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) will provide $15,300 to Pipestone Fly-in Outposts to upgrade two camps to solar power. The new system will replace the use of diesel fuel, reducing emissions and resulting in significant annual savings. Funding is provided through the NOHFC's Small Business Energy Conservation Program. The NOHFC has previously provided $7,760 to Pipestone Fly-in Outposts to install solar panels for an outpost camp on Smoothrock Lake near Wabakimi Provincial Park.

"Energy conservation is a priority for us all," said Bartolucci, who also chairs the NOHFC.  "We will continue to support businesses that are making the transition to environmentally sound energy technologies."

Other McGuinty government initiatives for northern prosperity include:

•    Introducing a new NOHFC Northern Energy Program to help private and public sector partners pursue clean renewable energy generation capacity to reduce their demand on external energy sources or to produce energy for sale to the electrical grid

•    Encouraging more Ontarians to consider solar installations by providing a provincial sales tax rebate on all solar equipment sold in Ontario.

This initiative is part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
