Heritage Fund Invests In Local Recreation Centre Upgrades

HEARST - The McGuinty government is promoting the health and well-being of Hearst residents by investing in the renovation of a local recreation complex, Minister of Northern Development and Mines Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"Our government is pleased to support the renovation of a facility that is so important to the social, recreational and cultural needs of this community," said Bartolucci. "These types of facilities contribute immensely to promoting the health and well being of northern residents."

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is providing $877,985 to the Town of Hearst to upgrade the Claude Larose Recreation Centre. The funding will be used to improve the safety and efficiency of the building as well as for renovations and repairs to asphalt and drainage, roofing, interior finishes and flooring, heating, ventilation, water and electrical systems. A portable stage and electronic billboard will also be added to the facility.

"It will make the centre a more functional facility by enhancing access for a broader range of recreation users and other community groups," said Bartolucci, who also chairs the NOHFC. "More youth and families will be able to participate in health and fitness activities, performing arts and other leisure activities."

This is just one more example of how, working together, Ontarians have achieved results in the North. Other examples include:

•    Investing $5,700 in the Hearst Economic Development Corporation to develop a comprehensive inventory of industrial and commercial properties in the Hearst area

•    Investing more than $2 million over the past two years to help some 100 young entrepreneurs launch their own business.

These initiatives are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. The plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
