Calvin Township Upgrading Centre To Meet Emergency Requirements

SUDBURY - The McGuinty government is helping to renovate the Calvin Township Community Centre, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.

"Our government understands the need to invest in public infrastructure in order to build a stronger, healthier North," said Bartolucci, who also chairs the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). "I am happy that we are able to support vital improvements that will better serve the needs of this community."

The NOHFC is providing $22,520 to upgrade the community centre to meet emergency designation requirements and to provide barrier-free access to the building. The centre currently houses municipal offices and council chamber.  Improvements to electrical, ventilation and lighting systems will enable the municipality to designate the facility as its emergency evacuation and operations centre.

"The centre is the community's only social, leisure and wellness facility where residents can come together for local events or functions," said Nipissing MPP Monique Smith. "Our government's continued investments in these recreational and social infrastructure in East Nipissing will assure the health and prosperity of its communities."

This is just one more example of how, working together, Ontarians have achieved results in community development.  Other examples include:

•    Providing $1 million to the Blue Sky Economic Growth Corporation to establish wireless, open-access broadband service in the Nipissing region

•    Providing $27,500 to the Mattawa Bonfield Economic Development Corporation to buy equipment to market and support town events and activities

•    Providing $13,500 through the Young Entrepreneur Program for the purchase of new equipment and fixtures for the canteen counter at the Mike Rodden Arena in Mattawa.

These initiatives are part of the government's Northern Prosperity Plan. It has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
