Ontario Invests In Local Business And Community Projects

Ontario continues to help new ideas take root in the North, through unique programs that boost local initiatives and support job creation.  The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is supporting 15 new projects:

The NOHFC Emerging Technology Program is investing $1,799,064 to help the City of Timmins, on behalf of the Northeastern Ontario Centre of Excellence Partnership, launch a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) project.  In co-operation with 17 area municipalities, Timmins is developing a comprehensive electronic database that will modernize municipal land records and improve access to information, which in turn will help attract new investment.

The NOHFC's Infrastructure and Community Development Program is investing $2,233,100 to help:

  • Northern College establish a Trade and Technology Centre at its Porcupine Campus, including new labs and trade shops;
  • the Town of Hearst improve its downtown core by developing a new market square;
  • the City of Timmins upgrade the McIntyre Community Centre.

The Northern Ontario Entrepreneur Program is investing $154,000 to:

  • establish Solar Power Solutions in Hearst - a business that will supply, install and service solar power and solar thermal systems as well as wind turbine units;
  • Advanteck Inc. of Timmins - a vehicle and heavy equipment monitoring service for small and medium-sized businesses in the North.
