Sudbury And Timmins Mining Operations Saving On Electricity Costs

McGuinty Government Helping To Reduce Energy Costs, Protect Jobs

Ontario is helping Vale Canada Inc. and Xstrata Canada Corporation (Xstrata Nickel Sudbury and Copper Timmins Operations) reduce energy costs, stay competitive and protect about 5,300 jobs.

Through the Northern Industrial Electricity Rate (NIER) program, the companies are receiving an energy rebate of two cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to help manage electricity costs and improve energy efficiency and sustainability.

Partnering with companies in Northern Ontario communities is part of the McGuinty government's plan to create and support jobs for Ontario families and to strengthen local economies.

Quick Facts

  • Ontario has provided $20 million to each of Vale Canada Inc. and Xstrata Canada Corporation (Sudbury and Timmins Operations) for energy efficiencies achieved in 2010-2011, and the companies will be eligible for further rebates as they continue to move forward with energy-efficiency programs.
  • Averaging $150 million per year in assistance, the three-year NIER program is providing electricity rebates to large industries in Northern Ontario that prepare and implement comprehensive energy management plans.
