Supporting Business Innovation in Northwestern Ontario
New Ontario Government Boosting Manufacturing Capacity in Thunder Bay
Ontario is helping to build a stronger, more diverse northern economy by making it easier for entrepreneurs to use technology to develop and manufacture products in Thunder Bay.
With support from the province's Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre (NOIC) is establishing an Advanced Manufacturing and Development Lab to support business innovation in the region. In partnership with local company Kam Valley Industries, NOIC is acquiring prototyping and manufacturing equipment that will support local innovators and create more high-tech manufacturing opportunities in the area.
Investing in business development is an important part of the Ontario government's Growth Plan for Northern Ontario. A strong northern economy will help create a fair society and give the people of Ontario more opportunities for jobs and economic prosperity.
- Ontario is providing $500,000 to this project through NOHFC’s Emerging Technology Program.
- Since 2005, the Emerging Technology Program has invested more than $170 million in 260 projects that have helped create about 1,600 jobs across Northern Ontario.
“The global economy is increasingly competitive and Ontario businesses need to be innovative. I am very pleased that the NOHFC is working with the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre to help northern enterprises develop their products and services to compete in today’s marketplace.”
“I know that Thunder Bay and Northern Ontario can compete on the world stage. In an increasingly global economy, we must be adapting on a regular basis.
