2015 Northeastern Ontario Highway Project Highlights

Ontario is investing $560 million in the 2015-16 Northern Highways Program to support highway rehabilitation and expansion projects across the North. 

Projects in Northeastern Ontario completed during the 2015 construction season include:  

  • Resurfacing 20.4 kilometres of Highway 11 from the Highway 631 junction westerly
  • Resurfacing 12 kilometres and improving drainage of Highway 17 from Bonfield to Corbeil
  • Resurfacing 18.1 kilometres of Highway 144 between Cartier and Onaping
  • Resurfacing sections of Highway 144 and replacing culverts between Chelmsford and Onaping
  • Resurfacing 51 kilometres and replacing culverts on Highway 631
  • Replacing culverts and improving drainage and guide rails on Highway 108
  • Replacing bridges and culverts, including White Clay River, Mondor Creek, Meadow Creek Cedar Creek, West Beaton and Picnic Lake
  • Rehabilitating bridges at Aidie Creek, Chippewa River, Englehart River, Goulais River, Otawasian River and Harmony River
  • Four-laning nine kilometres of Highway 69 from just north of Highway 64 to the Murdock River

Work is continuing on these multi-year projects:

  • Resurfacing 23.4 kilometres of Highway 108 from Elliot Lake southerly
  • Repaving 10.5 kilometres of Highway 17, building and extending passing lanes and rehabilitating the Big Cache Creek culvert
  • Rehabilitating and replacing six culverts on Highway 11 and Highway 652 near Cochrane
  • Realigning 3.2 kilometres of the Trans-Canada Highway 66 at Virginiatown
  • Rehabilitating the French River bridge on Highway 69
  • Realigning 2.7 kilometres of CN railway tracks and building three new highway bridges for the expansion of Highway 69 at Highway 522
  • Four-laning 11 kilometres of Highway 69 from Highway 607 to Highway 64

In addition, the province recently awarded several rehabilitation contracts, with work to begin in 2016:

  • Replacing the Duchesnay Creek bridge on Highway 11 north of North Bay ($7.9-million contract awarded to Miller Paving Limited)
  • Resurfacing 11.1 kilometres of Highway 11 south of Temagami ($9.1-million contract awarded to Miller Paving Limited)
  • Rehabilitating 6.8 kilometres of Highway 11B from the Highway 11 junction northerly ($4.7-million contract awarded to Miller Paving Limited)
  • Rehabilitating 4.8 kilometres of Highway 11 south of the Highway 534 interchange ($18.9-million contract awarded to Aecon Construction and Materials Limited)
