2016 Northeastern Ontario Highway Project Highlights

Ontario is investing $541 million through the 2016-17 Northern Highways Program to support highway rehabilitation and expansion projects across the North.

Key projects in Northeastern Ontario completed during the 2016 construction season include:

  • Highway 6, resurfacing 12 kilometres south of Whitefish Falls northerly
  • Highway 11, resurfacing 7 kilometres including replacing bridge north of Highway17/11B junction north of North Bay
  • Highway 11, resurfacing 11 kilometres including rehabilitating culverts south of Lakeshore Drive southerly at Temagami
  • Highway 11, resurfacing 5 kilometres south of Latchford southerly
  • Highways 11 and 652, replacing and rehabilitating culverts south, east and west of Highway 579 near Cochrane
  • Highway 11B, resurfacing 7 kilometres south of the junction of Highway 11B northerly to Haileybury
  • Highway 17, intersection improvement for 1 kilometre at Highway 17 and Municipal Rd. 4 west of Sudbury
  • Highway 17, resurfacing 21 kilometres east of Municipal Rd. 55 interchange westerly, west of Sudbury
  • Highway 17, resurfacing 15 kilometres including replacing and rehabilitating culverts from Highway 539 at Warren to Highway 64 at Verner
  • Highway 17, resurfacing 10 kilometres including new passing lane and rehabilitating existing passing lane and culvert at Sturgeon Falls westerly
  • Highways 65 and 66, resurfacing 16 kilometres including rehabilitating culvert south of Highway 66 northerly, north of Englehart
  • Highway 69, rehabilitating the French River bridge  
  • Highway 69, four-lane widening for 14 kilometres north of Highway 607 northerly
  • Highway 101, resurfacing 48 kilometres including Shawmere River bridge rehabilitation easterly at Foleyet
  • Highway 101, resurfacing 21 kilometres from Foleyet easterly
  • Highway 108, resurfacing 23 kilometres from Highway 17 northerly to Elliot Lake 
  • Highways 112 and 650, resurfacing 21 kilometres from Highway 11 northerly toward Kirkland Lake
  • Highway 144, resurfacing 12 kilometres including replacing culvert at Regional Rd. 12 northerly
  • Highway 144, resurfacing 36 kilometres at Half Way Lake northerly, north of Cartier
  • Highways 540, 542 and 551, resurfacing 14 kilometres includes replacing and rehabilitating bridges and rehabilitating culverts east of the Hwy 542 junction northerly near Mindemoya
  • Highways 552 and 556, resurfacing 10 kilometres east of Highway 17 near Heyden
  • Highway 7182, reconstructing 7 kilometres (Shebeshekong Road)
  • Replacing bridges and culverts at Bradburn Creek, Haines Creek, Jenkins Creek, Jocko Creek, Jessie River, Obijou River, Phillips Creek, Prune Creek, Six Mile Creek, Sharpsand River, Tamarac Creek
  • Rehabilitating bridges and culverts at Lost Lake, McCarty Creek, Silver Creek, Sturgeon River

Work is continuing on these multi-year projects:

  • Highway 11, resurfacing 5 kilometres including new bridge and culverts and culvert replacement and rehabilitation south of Hwy 534 interchange at Powassan
  • Highway 11, resurfacing 32 kilometres from Kapuskasing to Opasatika including bridge and culvert rehabilitation and culvert replacement
  • Highway 11, replacing bridges at the Nagagami and Shekak rivers west of Calstock
  • Highways 6 and 17, resurfacing 22 kilometres and rehabilitating bridges west of Highway 6 easterly to Nairn Centre
  • Highway 60, resurfacing 19 kilometres including bridge and culvert rehabilitation and culvert replacements at Highway 127 easterly, east of Whitney
  • Highway 66, realigning 3.5 kilometres at Virginiatown
  • Highway 69, four-laning widening 15 kilometres north of Hwy 522 northerly
  • Highway 547, rehabilitating bridges at Hawk and McVeigh creeks east of Wawa
  • Highway 654, resurfacing 23 kilometres includes bridge rehabilitations from Highway 534 easterly to Highway 11 near Nipissing
  • Highways 17 and 101, resurfacing 33 kilometres including culvert rehabilitation south of Highway 101 northerly toward Wawa
  • Highways 540 and 540B, resurfacing 18 kilometres including bridge replacement, culvert replacements and culvert rehabilitations west of Hwy 551

In addition, the province recently awarded a rehabilitation contract, with work to begin in 2017:

  • Rehabilitating 30 kilometres of Highway 11 from the Opasatika River bridge westerly ($24.7-million contract awarded to C. Villeneuve Construction Co. Ltd.)
