Providing Internship Opportunities in Greater Sudbury
Program Helping Graduates Gain Real-World Work Experience
Ontario is helping local college and university graduates gain hands-on, practical work experience by supporting one-year internships in the Greater Sudbury Area.
Minister Glenn Thibeault made the announcement today in Sudbury. New local placements, which will provide work experience and skill-building opportunities for 117 young people, include:
- An Indigenous Initiatives Intern, who will help develop science experiences at Science North to engage students in First Nations schools and communities across Northern Ontario
- A Research Assistant Intern, who will help to conduct a research study investigating key infection profiles of the bacteria Clostridium Difficile at Health Sciences North
- A Research Technician Intern, who will assist researchers and graduate students with multi-disciplinary research projects at Laurentian University
- A Lab Technician Intern, who will provide support to scientists and operate an environmental lab at Vale Living with Lakes Centre.
Providing work experience for new graduates and supporting local businesses in the North is part of Ontario's plan to create jobs, grow the economy and help people in their everyday lives.
- Ontario is investing $2.9 million in this Northern Ontario Internship Program, which is administered through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.
- Since 2013, NOHFC has invested over $89 million and leveraged more than $405 million toward 590 projects in the Region of Sudbury to create and retain 1,337 jobs.
- Since 2013, NOHFC has made total investments of more than $471 million across Northern Ontario, leveraging over $1.5 billion in direct economic activity and helping to create or sustain 10,532 jobs.
- In Northern Ontario last year, 544 people participated in the internship program.
- Since 2013, Ontario has invested nearly $52 million through the NOHFC to support new internships across Northern Ontario.
- The NOHFC works to build strong, prosperous Northern communities through unique programs.
