2017 Highway Construction Season Underway in the North

Ontario is investing nearly $630 million through the 2017-18 Northern Highways Program to support highway rehabilitation and expansion projects across the North.

The government continues to place a priority on the four-laning of major highway corridors in Northern Ontario, including Highway 69 between Parry Sound and Sudbury, and Highway 11/17 between Thunder Bay and Nipigon. Construction continues on these expansion projects:

Northwest Region

  • Highway 11/17 expansion, four-laning 19.5 kilometres in three sections at the  Nipigon River Bridge and approaches (2.8 kilometres), from Red Rock Road No. 9 to Stillwater Creek Bridge (10.1 kilometres), and from Birch Beach Road to Highway 587 at Pass Lake (6.6 kilometres)

Northeast Region

  • Highway 69 expansion, four-laning 14 kilometres in the French River area between Highway 64 and Highway 522

The province is continuing to award highway contracts for work to begin this year. To date, the following key rehabilitation projects have been confirmed:

 

Northwest Region

  • Highway 11, replacing the culvert at Chowder Creek and, on Highway 625, replacing the culvert at Sandlink Creek near Caramat ($3.2-million contract awarded to Toronto Zenith Inc.)
  • Highway 11, replacing culverts at Jackfish Creek, Kemuel and Lerome lakes and improvements at the MNRF dam at Lerome Lake near Atikokan ($5.4-million contract awarded to L H North Ltd.)
  • Highway 11, replacing culverts at Norami and Watson lakes and rehabilitating the Postagoni River culvert ($3.9-million contract awarded to KA Vanderzwaag Construction Inc.)
  • Highway 11, replacing culverts at Ramsdale, Westovers and Dilke creeks near Rainy River ($6.3-million contract awarded to Tom Veert Contracting Ltd.)
  • Highway 11, replacing culverts at Chowder and Flynne creeks east of Longlac ($3.4-million contract awarded to Toronto Zenith Contracting Limited)
  • Highway 11, replacing culverts at Kitchen Creek and on Highway 602, Turner and Lyon No. 2 creeks west of Fort Frances ($3.7-million contract awarded to L H North Ltd.)
  • Highway 11, resurfacing 20.7 kilometres from Mine Centre easterly ($6.6-million contract awarded to Maple Leaf Construction Ltd.)
  • Highway 17, resurfacing 19.3 kilometres west of Highway 665 near Dryden ($11.8-million contract awarded to Miller Northwest Limited)
  • Highway 17, resurfacing from west of Schreiber westerly for 19 kilometres ($15.7-million contract awarded to Teranorth Construction & Engineering Limited)
  • Highway 61, replacing culverts at Jarvis River and Slate River Tributary south of Thunder Bay ($4-million contract awarded to Wilco Contractors Superior Inc.)
  • Highway 71, resurfacing 24.9 kilometres at Sioux Narrows ($5.8-million contract awarded to Pioneer Construction Inc.)
  • Highway 105, resurfacing 30.5 kilometres from Vermilion Bay northerly ($15.9-million contract awarded to Maple Leaf Construction Inc.)
  • Highway 130, resurfacing from Highway 61 northerly for 15.2 kilometres ($3.9 million contract awarded to Pioneer Construction Inc.)
  • Highway 502, resurfacing 38.5 kilometres from 66 kilometres north of Highway 11 near Fort Frances ($11.7-million contract awarded to Miller Northwest Limited)
  • Highways 516 and 642, replacing culverts at Deception Lake and Minnikau River near Sioux Lookout ($4-million contract awarded to Toronto Zenith Contracting Limited)
  • Highways 588 and 590, resurfacing 30.2 kilometres, rehabilitating the culvert at Cedar Creek and replacing culverts at Whitewood and Pitch creeks west of Thunder Bay ($11.9-million contract awarded to Pioneer Construction Inc.)
  • Highway 599, rehabilitation of three Albany River bridges south of New Osnaburgh ($6.2 million contract awarded to Brennan Paving & Construction Ltd.)
  • Highway 618, resurfacing 11.7 kilometres from Highway 105 in Red Lake westerly ($8.2-million contract awarded to Pioneer Construction Inc.)
  • Highways 619 and 621, replacing culverts at Gerhard, Peterson and Brusvine creeks north of Rainy River ($4.5-million contract awarded to The Sharp Group)
  • Highway 658, resurfacing 20.2 kilometres from 4.4 kilometres north of Highway 17A northerly, north of Kenora ($9.4-million contract awarded to Miller Northwest Limited)

Northeast Region

  • Highway 11, resurfacing 6.9 kilometres from 1 kilometre south of the Lakeshore Drive underpass north to 0.2 kilometres north of the Highway 17 interchange in North Bay ($8.4-million contract awarded to R.W. Tomlinson Limited)
  • Highway 11, resurfacing 19.2 kilometres south of Cochrane ($10.2-million contract awarded to Interpaving Limited, ARG Rentals Inc.)
  • Highway 11, resurfacing 7.2 kilometres south of Emsdale ($5.1-million contract awarded to Fowler Construction Company Limited)
  • Highway 17, resurfacing sections from Serpent River easterly to Cutler ($8.6-million contract awarded to J & P Leveque Bros. Haulage Limited)
  • Highway 17, resurfacing 22.2 kilometres west of the intersection of Highway 17 and Municipal Road 55 west of Sudbury, including rehabilitating six structures and replacing a culvert ($33.4-million contract awarded to Aecon Construction and Materials Limited)
  • Highway 17, resurfacing 27.9 kilometres from south of the junction of Highway 552 north to the Chippewa River bridge ($21.7-million contract awarded to Pioneer Construction Inc.)
  • Highway 60, resurfacing 13.6 kilometres from east of Station Road to Kearney Creek bridge ($6.8-million contract awarded to Bonnechere Excavating Inc.)
  • Highway 64, resurfacing 12.4 kilometres between Highway 539 and Island Lake Road in West Nipissing ($5.8-million contract awarded to Miller Paving Limited)
  • Highways 69, 529 and 526, rehabilitating the bridges at Still and Naiscoot rivers and CPR overhead, and culverts at Byng Inlet and Giroux Lake, resurfacing from Highway 69 westerly to Britt post office ($7.9-million contract awarded to Innovative Civil Constructors Incorporated)
  • Highway 129, resurfacing 26.6 kilometres south of the junction with Highway 101 near Chapleau ($8.6-million contract awarded to Miller Paving Ltd.)
  • Highway 144, replacing the Whitson River bridge (20.6 kilometres north of Highway 17) and the Vermilion River Tributary culvert (4.5 kilometres north of Whitson River), rehabilitating the CPR overhead bridge at Dowling and replacing the Highway 7044 Pumphouse Creek culvert near Cartier ($7.3-million contract awarded to Aecon Construction and Materials Limited)
  • Highway 144, resurfacing two sections for a total of 14.3 kilometres north of Gogama ($3.1-million contract awarded to Interpaving Limited, ARG Rentals Inc.)
  • Highway 400, preventive resurfacing 16.7 kilometres on northbound and southbound lanes from 0.1 kilometres south of Healy Lake Road underpass to 6.7 kilometres north of Highway 141 Interchange ($3.9-million contract awarded to Fowler Construction Company Limited)
  • Highway 519, resurfacing 30.6 kilometres from east of Highway 17 to Dubreilville ($8.6-million contract awarded to Pioneer Construction Inc.)

Highway 540, resurfacing 17.6 kilometres west of Little Current ($5.2-million contract awarded to Pioneer Construction Inc.)
