Ministers' Statement on Herbicide 2,4,5-T Report

Today, David Orazietti, Minister of Natural Resources, and Jim Bradley, Minister of the Environment, issued the following statement on the Ontario Independent Fact-Finding Panel’s report on herbicide 2,4,5-T:

“We would like to thank Dr. Ritter and the panel for their work on this topic and their report. Our government will review the report to determine if any additional steps need to be taken to address its findings.

The health and safety of our current and former employees of the Ontario Public Service and of all Ontarians, is vitally important.

That’s why the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board is also reviewing the report as part of its work to adjudicate claims from workers who have health issues that may have been caused by workplace exposure to herbicides such as 2,4,5-T.

We also encourage anyone who has questions about their health to see their primary health care provider.

Ontario has rigorous requirements in place when it comes to the use and sale of herbicides and other pesticides in the province. Our government has comprehensive regulations that safely control how herbicides and pesticides are sold, transported, used, stored and disposed, including front-line staff from across government who conduct proactive outreach and inspections to ensure that companies and individuals are using and handling herbicides safely and in accordance with the province’s standards and conditions.

Our government is committed to protecting the health of the public and the environment.”
