What People are Saying About Sustainable Forest Licence for Whitefeather Forest

"Pikangikum people have been living in the Whitefeather Forest for a long time. The forest has supported us over many generations. With our Sustainable Forest Licence, we will be able to achieve economic renewal for our forest."

- Elder Gideon Peters, Whitefeather Forest Steering Group Coordinator

“It has been the vision of the Elders since the start of the Whitefeather Forest Initiative to create a good future for our youth and for generations still to come. This has been our motivation. With the issuance of the Whitefeather Forest Sustainable Forest Licence, the vision of the Elders, especially of those who have already left us, can move ahead into enterprise. The Elders saw the opportunity we could have in forestry in 1996. We will move forward with our partners.”

- Elder Tom Quill Sr., Whitefeather Forest Steering Group Coordinator

“Under the guidance of our Elders, we have finally achieved our most important goal in the planning of the Whitefeather Forest Initiative. The Sustainable Forest Licence (SFL) has been issued for the Whitefeather Forest. In 2001, our late Chief Louie Quill asked me to come into his office. He asked me to work on this project to see it all the way through to an SFL. It has taken a lot of effort and a lot of time, but we have achieved his request. On behalf of our community, I want to express our appreciation to our Elders. They are our capacity. We also want to express our appreciation to our MNR partners and our Technical Team. Now we will proceed with developing value-added forest products opportunities while managing the Whitefeather Forest to international acclaim.”

- Alex Peters, President, Whitefeather Forest Community Resource Management Authority
