New Armstrong Fire Attack Base
Ontario is investing $9.65 million in firefighting infrastructure by rebuilding the Armstrong Fire Attack Base, located approximately 250 kilometres north of Thunder Bay. This fire attack base is strategically located to allow for quick response to wildfires in northwestern Ontario.
Construction at the Armstrong base includes:
- Adding staff quarters for 20 people
- Building a new warehouse facility
The benefits of the new fire attack base include:
- The new staff quarters to provide modern sleeping accommodation, separate locker and shower/washroom facilities to provide equal opportunity employment for male and female FireRangers
- A back-up generator to allow for continuity of operations during power outages
The new construction will follow Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles, including solar power and other energy-efficient features.
Construction is expected to be completed by September 2014.
