Court Imposes $54,074 in Fines for Possession of Unmarked Cigarettes

Penalty Imposed:  A fine of $54,074.45 was imposed on Mr. Prevost. He was given 30 days to pay. The court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge as required under the Provincial Offences Act.

Background:  On November 25, 2016, Ontario Provincial Police officers stopped a vehicle operated by Mr. Prevost on Highway 17 in the Township of Schreiber. A subsequent search of the vehicle, under the Tobacco Tax Act, revealed 115,400 unmarked cigarettes. The cigarettes were seized and forfeited.
