Ontario Man Fined $5,142 for Possession of Unmarked Cigarettes

Date of Conviction: November 28, 2017, at the Brantford Provincial Offences Court

Penalty Imposed: A fine of $5,142.50 was imposed on Mr. You. He was given 12 months to pay. The court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge as required under the Provincial Offences Act.

Background: On March 3, 2017, Ontario Provincial Police officers conducted a routine traffic stop on Pauline Road in the County of Brant. While speaking to the driver police observed multiple boxes of unmarked cigarettes in plain view. A subsequent search of the vehicle, under the Tobacco Tax Act, revealed 10,000 unmarked cigarettes. The cigarettes were seized and forfeited.
