$30,000 Fine for Possession of Unmarked Cigarettes

Description of Offence: Possession of unmarked cigarettes under the Tobacco Tax Act

Date of Offence: July 26, 2017

Date of Conviction: May 3, 2018, at the Napanee Ontario Court

Penalty Imposed: A fine of $30,000 was imposed. In addition, the court imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge as required under the Provincial Offences Act.

Background: On July 26, 2017, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police searched a vehicle and discovered 580,000 unmarked cigarettes. All tobacco products were seized and forfeited.
