Description of Offences: Possession of unmarked cigarettes and untaxed tobacco for the purpose of sale under the Tobacco Tax Act

Date of Offences: October 23, 2017

Date of Convictions: April 3, 2018, at the Mississauga Provincial Offences Court

Penalties Imposed:

  • A fine of $34,800.95 for possession of unmarked cigarettes for the purpose of sale
  • A fine of $17,433.82 for possession of untaxed tobacco for the purpose of sale

Ziad Boutari was given 30 days to pay. The court also imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge as required under the Provincial Offences Act.

Background: On October 23, 2017, officers from the OPP Contraband Tobacco Enforcement Team searched a vehicle and discovered 69,400 unmarked cigarettes and 33,250 grams of untaxed tobacco. All tobacco products were seized and forfeited.
