Province Seizes Over Two Thousand Kilograms of Untaxed Tobacco

Description of Seizure: The ministry seized over two thousand kilograms of untaxed water pipe tobacco.
Background: Ministry investigators executed a search warrant on a retail business in Mississauga and discovered over two thousand kilograms of untaxed water pipe tobacco. The tobacco products were seized and the investigators are expecting to lay charges under the Tobacco Tax Act.
- Businesses or individuals engaging in retail or wholesale of tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products, including water pipe tobacco, must hold valid permits issued by the Ministry of Finance.
- In addition to court-imposed fines for contraventions of the Tobacco Tax Act, convicted individuals and businesses may be required to pay civil penalties.
- From April 2017 to March 2018 there were 172 Tobacco Tax Act convictions yielding fines of more than $2.8 million, 22 jail terms, 12 probation terms and two community service terms.
