$2,000 Fine for Making a False Statement Under the Land Transfer Tax Act

Description of Offence: Making a false statement in an application for a refund, under the Land Transfer Act

Date of Offence: June 1, 2018

Date of Conviction: June 25, 2019, at the Mississauga Provincial Offences Court

Penalties Imposed: A fine of $2,000 was imposed. In addition, the court imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge as required under the Provincial Offences Act.

Background: On June 1, 2018, Rola Taki purchased a home and indicated that she was a first-time home purchaser. As a result, she received a first-time home purchaser refund. Upon investigation, it was determined that Taki was not eligible to receive this refund as she had previously purchased a home.
