Possession of Unmarked Cigarettes Leads to $10,000 Fine

Description of Offence: Possession of unmarked cigarettes, under the Tobacco Tax Act

Date of Offence: January 18, 2018

Date of Conviction: November 6, 2019, at the Whitby Provincial Offences Court

Penalty Imposed: A fine of $10,000 was imposed. In addition, the court imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge as required under the Provincial Offences Act.

Background: On January 18, 2018, Durham Regional Police officers attended a residence and discovered 54,800 unmarked cigarettes. The tobacco products were seized and forfeited.
