Province Investing Over $6.5 Million for Health Care in Guelph and Wellington

Ontario Improving Access to Emergency Mental Health Services

Ontario will be providing more than $3 million to expand emergency mental health services at hospitals in Guelph and in Wellington County. 

The following hospitals will be receiving new emergency mental health funding:

  • Guelph General Hospital: $2,416,300
  • Groves Memorial Community Hospital: $326,100
  • North Wellington Health Care Corporation, including Louise Marshall Hospital and Palmerston and District Hospital: $326,100

This investment will ensure that Guelph General Hospital will have a mental health nurse available 24 hours a day and it will also support new addictions counsellors. At Groves Hospital, Palmerston District Hospital and Louise Marshall Hospital, mental health assessments will now be available on evenings, weekends and holidays. 

The funding will enable these hospitals to provide timely crisis intervention, psychotherapy and support to patients and families. Patients who need daily crisis support will receive more dedicated care, while also getting faster access to community psychiatry services to shorten hospital stays.

In addition, patients in Guelph will benefit from:

  • An over $2.5 million increase in operating funding for Guelph General Hospital
  • An over $665,000 increase in operating funding for St. Joseph's Health Care in Guelph
  • More than $100,000 to continue the local Community Paramedicine pilot program that provides home visits from paramedics to seniors and other patients living with chronic health conditions. This initiative helps to reduce emergency room visits and hospital admissions.  

Investing in the health care priorities that matter most to patients is part of the government's plan to build a better Ontario through its Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care, which provides patients with faster access to the right care; better home and community care; the information they need to live healthy; and a health care system that is sustainable for generations to come.

Quick Facts

  • Community Paramedicine allows paramedics to apply their training and skills beyond emergency response and transportation to an emergency department, for example, by pro-actively visiting patients in their homes. The initiative helps seniors and other patients live independently.
  • Expanding community-based mental health services is also part of the next phase of Ontario’s Comprehensive Mental Health and Addictions Strategy. The strategy includes $138 million over three years for community agencies to support improvements to mental health and addictions services.
  • Approximately 30 per cent of Ontarians will experience a mental health and/or substance abuse challenge at some point in their lifetime, with one out of 40 Ontarians experiencing a serious mental illness.
  • The number of nurses in the city of Guelph rose from 1,329 to 1,612 between 2010 and 2014.
  • Ontario’s health care budget has increased from $47.6 billion in 2012-13 to a total of $51.8 billion in 2016-17.
  • This year’s $51.8 billion investment in health care is a 2.1 per cent increase over last year – greater than the rate of inflation.
