Ontario Establishing Patient and Family Advisory Council

Council to Advise on Improving Health Care, Patient Experience

Ministry of Health

Ontario is creating a Patient and Family Advisory Council to advise government on health policy priorities that have an impact on patient care and patient experiences in Ontario.

The council will involve patients, families, and caregivers in the policy development process, ensuring that their needs and concerns are fully understood, and will help the health system become more responsive, transparent and accountable. Members of the council will be chosen through a public process that includes opportunities to nominate suitable candidates.

The creation of a Patient and Family Advisory Council is a component of Ontario's Open Government initiative and supports the province's efforts to promote Open Dialogue.

Improved and expanded patient engagement is part of the government's plan to build a better Ontario through its Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care, which provides patients with faster access to the right care, better home and community care, the information they need to live healthy, and a health care system that is sustainable for generations to come.

Quick Facts

  • The development of a Patient and Family Advisory Council is based on feedback received by the government through close collaboration with Health Quality Ontario, and in consultation with many partners in health care, especially patients from across the province.
  • To nominate someone or to apply to be a member of the Patient and Family Advisory Council, please contact patientfamilyadvisorycouncil@ontario.ca.
  • The Chair and members of the Patient and Family Advisory Council will be announced in winter 2017.

“Ontario’s health care system belongs to all Ontarians. By establishing a Patient Family Advisory Council, we are working to ensure that Ontarians are engaged in the transformation of their health care system. It will ensure that we are not just informing the public of policy decisions that affect them, but involving and consulting with them in making these decisions. I look forward to hearing from this group as we continue to build a health care system that is truly patient-centred.”
