Ministers' Statement Regarding York University Strike
Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn and Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development Mitzie Hunter issued the following statement today regarding the labour dispute at York University:
"We have received and reviewed the report from Mr. Kaplan. We thank him for his efforts, and like all involved, are disappointed that this dispute has not been resolved.
Our government's focus is on the students, and our priority continues to be getting them back in the classroom as quickly as possible. Although negotiated agreements remain the best way for collective agreements to be reached, Mr. Kaplan found that the parties have reached an impasse and there is no reason to believe that they will be able to resolve their dispute through continued negotiations.
Mr. Kaplan has recommended that the government call upon the parties to enter into consensual interest arbitration: for their own good, and for the good of thousands of students and the university. We accept all of Mr. Kaplan's recommendations, and ask that the parties look at his report, accept the recommendations, and enter into consensual interest arbitration as quickly as possible."
