Ontario Supporting Bombardier Workers in Thunder Bay
Dedicated Centre for Employment and Re-training Services opened
THUNDER BAY - The Ontario government is supporting workers impacted by layoffs at the Bombardier plant in Thunder Bay by providing them with training and services to get back to work quickly.
Today, the Ontario government, working with Bombardier, Unifor Local 1075 and the Canadian Office Professionals Union Local 81, opened a new Action Centre for affected Bombardier workers in Thunder Bay.
"When there is a big layoff, it affects not only workers, but also their families and the larger community. That's why this Action Centre is so important: by supporting this Centre, we support the people of Thunder Bay," said Jane McKenna, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. "I want to thank Unifor, the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (COPE), Bombardier, and all the partners that made this centre possible."
Working collaboratively with the Employment Ontario service-delivery network, the Bombardier Transportation Action Centre will connect laid-off workers with local job and training opportunities and services that can help them re-join the workforce. It will also provide practical assistance with things like resume writing and counselling.
"Our Government will do what we can to help the workers, families and the community of Thunder Bay through this difficult time," said Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. "We know that people and businesses need help to keep pace with the changes in Ontario's economy. With this Action Centre, we are giving Bombardier workers in Thunder Bay access to training programs and employment services to help them land on their feet and get back to work quickly."
The Centre will provide individualized support to help Bombardier workers, and affected employees have already been informed about the Action Centre.
"Bombardier is committed to the Thunder Bay plant and we continue to work with our partners, the community and all three levels of government to bring significant new contracts and bring our talented and skilled employees back to work," said Chief Operating Officer of Bombardier Transportation, Americas Region David Van der Wee. "Several initiatives and mitigation measures were put in place to bring more work and we continue to develop others. We also welcome all initiatives that support our employees through this difficult time."

The Action Centre will also have an online presence to keep workers informed of services, resources and activities available through the Centre.
Ontario's Rapid Re-Employment and Training Service and local action centres are dedicated to connecting job-seekers with immediate supports and quick access to training for good, quality jobs.
- Ontario is investing $613,430 to help affected Bombardier workers through its Rapid Re-employment Training Service.
- The Bombardier Transportation Action Centre is located at 112 Gore Street West in Thunder Bay and offers services and supports for Bombardier workers affected by lay-offs.
- The Employment Ontario network offers a range of services and supports that help businesses find talent and connect job-seekers to training and job opportunities. These services range from in-person support with job-search, resume and interview preparation to access to training programs like Literacy and Basic Skills, Youth Job Connection or Second Career. Employers may get matched with job-seekers, or they may qualify for financial support through the Canada-Ontario Job Grant if they purchase training for current or future employees.
