Supporting Discoveries and Creating Jobs in Ontario

Province’s Researchers Finding Innovative Solutions to Global Challenges

Ontario is investing in innovative research, encouraging economic growth and supporting job creation.

A total of 3,700 researchers will directly benefit from the government's investment of almost $14 million in the Early Researcher Awards program and over $45 million in the Ontario Research Fund - Research Infrastructure program.

The Early Researcher Awards program helps recently-appointed researchers make new discoveries while creating jobs for graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research assistants. The Ontario Research Fund - Research Infrastructure program provides institutions with funding to help cover the costs of modern facilities and equipment.

Building the province's knowledge economy is part of the government's economic plan that is creating jobs for today and tomorrow. The comprehensive plan and its six priorities focus on Ontario's greatest strengths - its people and strategic partnerships.

Quick Facts

  • Ontario has helped fund the work of over 12,300 highly qualified people through the Early Researcher Awards program.
  • Over 20,600 highly qualified people have been recruited or trained through the Ontario Research Fund – Research Infrastructure program.
  • In 2010, Ontario invested 2.2 per cent of its gross domestic product in research and development, ahead of the national average of 1.9 per cent.
