Making the Ontario Music Fund Permanent
Province Providing $15 Million Annually to Help Music Industry Grow
Ontario is supporting a strong, competitive, sustainable music industry in the province by making the Ontario Music Fund permanent.
The fund, created in 2013 as a three-year program, provides $15 million per year to support the thriving music sector in Ontario, enhance live music and create opportunities for local emerging artists.
Support from the fund's first year has already helped to create or retain 2,000 jobs and generate $24 million in additional revenue for music-related businesses.
Positioning the province as a global destination to record and perform music is part of the government's plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan includes investing in people's talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan.
- The music recording industry generates more than $429 million in revenue every year in Ontario.
- Ontario has the largest music production sector in the country, generating more than 80 per cent of Canada’s total music industry revenue.
- Supercrawl is one of Ontario’s fastest growing art and music festivals – the festival has an economic impact of $14 million, and has grown its audience from 3,000 attendees in 2009 to over 160,000 in 2014.
“Ontario has the largest music sector in Canada and one of the most diverse in the world. By continuing the Ontario Music Fund, our government is supporting the industry, creating the right opportunities for artists and music businesses to grow and thrive in recorded and live music right here at home.”
“Ontario’s music industry is innovative, diverse and thriving. The success of the first year of the Ontario Music Fund is evidenced by the jobs it supports and the contributions it makes to the Ontario economy and is a testament to the industry’s potential for continued growth. Our government is proud to continue to support the Ontario Music Fund as it enables Ontario’s music industry to take advantage of opportunities in the global marketplace and solidifies Ontario’s reputation as a leading destination for music performers and producers worldwide. — ,”
“Our region is home to a unique and dynamic music scene of emerging and established artists. The continuation of the Ontario Music Fund is good news for the local industry and will help ensure music continues to be a cornerstone of the region, resulting in more opportunities to create and showcase our music to new audiences.”
“On an annual and ongoing basis, Supercrawl Productions provides opportunities to local, regional and national artists and musical performers. We’re dedicated to setting the bar high and putting on a great event every year. None of that would be possible without leveraging the power of partnerships. Throughout Supercrawl’s development, partners such as the Government of Ontario and funding streams such as the Ontario Music Fund have been instrumental in making the event possible.”
