Ontario Music Fund Success Stories
The Ontario Music Fund (OMF) is helping the music industry by promoting jobs and economic growth, enhancing tourism throughout the province and strengthening Ontario's position as a global music leader. Last year, the second year of the fund, saw many successes including:
A Tribe Called Red, two-time Polaris Prize nominees and 2014 JUNO award winners for Breakthrough Group of the Year, enhanced their touring capacity with support from the OMF in 2015, selling out shows on a recent U.S. tour. OMF funding also helped this Ottawa-based DJ crew hire staff to support their business capacity and growth in the electronic/DJ music genre.
The Guelph Jazz Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2014 with the help of OMF funding. The addition of a second youth-oriented eco-friendly stage at Market Square increased the number and quality of live music experiences in Guelph, featuring Ontario and Canadian artists. The bike-powered stage drove attendance up by 50 per cent and expanded the audience demographic. OMF funding also helped the festival develop new sponsorships and build its strategic and business planning capacity through a comprehensive economic and demographic study.
Dine Alone Records celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015 with a number of OMF-supported activities including: an anniversary tour in clubs across Canada, anniversary releases with specialty branding and unique customized "pop-up" mobile trailer featuring special releases and acoustic performances. OMF funding also helped advance the label's Canadian and international marketing and promotion for 15 artists including Toronto hip hop artist, K-OS, and popular Hamilton-based rock bands Monster Truck and the Arkells.
CP Music Group has achieved an unprecedented period of growth with the chart-topping, multi-platinum success of The Weeknd, Belly and songwriters/producers DannyBoyStyles and Daheala. OMF provided recording, marketing and touring funding for the label's roster, as well as business development support. 2016 has already been a huge success for the team behind The Weeknd's multi-platinum effort, Beauty Behind the Madness, with Grammy Award wins for both Best R&B Performance and Best Urban Contemporary Album, an Academy Award nomination, five JUNO awards including Single of the Year and Album of the Year.
Phem Phat Entertainment Group celebrated the 20th anniversary of Honey Jam in 2015, an all-female, multi-genre showcase for emerging Ontario talent. The showcase was created to address the lack of exposure and promotion given to local female performers. OMF funding helped Phem Phat strengthen the profile of Honey Jam through enhanced branding, which increased exposure through traditional and social media. Support from the OMF also helped Phem Phat create initiatives and programming that will expand the Honey Jam brand and build its business capacity.
