Statement from the Minister of Transportation on The Big Move

Ministry of Transportation

Today, Glen Murray, Minister of Transportation and Minister of Infrastructure, issued the following statement on Metrolinx'sThe Big Move transit plan:

"Our government is moving forward with The Big Move. This regional strategy for transportation and public transit will unlock gridlock, create jobs and get people and goods moving in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

We look forward to the recommendations in Metrolinx's investment strategy on how to pay for these important transit projects.

Our government will be undertaking a detailed review of the investment strategy's recommendations to ensure optimization of The Big Move strategy in partnership with local communities and municipalities.  As with all long-term plans, there is always room to make improvements over time in response to emerging needs and the views of communities and municipal partners.

This process will be fair and transparent. Any investments from new revenue will be entirely and transparently dedicated to transportation projects, so that the cost is directly tied to a measurable result.

People need to know what they are paying for; they need to see where the money is going.

Those living in northern or eastern Ontario will not be paying for projects in the GTHA but they will benefit from them as the projects will relieve congestion, providing a better economy and business environment to move goods and services around more efficiently. And more importantly, these transit projects will help people get to work easily and get home more quickly to spend time with their loved ones.

We are committed to ensuring that our various modes of transportation connect people efficiently to where they need to go throughout the region, and that all routes are complementary to the Places to Grow Act."
