Statement by the Minister of Transportation on Highway Maintenance Services for Kenora Area

Ministry of Transportation

Today, Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation, issued the following statement on highway maintenance services for the Kenora Area:

"The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) will be looking for a new highway maintenance services provider for the Kenora area. The current service provider for Kenora, Transfield Services, and MTO have mutually agreed to end the current Kenora area maintenance contract effective August 31, 2015. This mutual decision is based on what is best for the province, the travelling public and for Transfield Services.

In April, the ministry will issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to acquire a new service provider through an open and transparent competitive process. This will ensure that service is not disrupted and will allow us the time to have winter maintenance services secured and ready for next winter. We are committed to ensuring continuity of winter maintenance services for residents and road users of the Northwest region.

As we tender new contracts, we are always looking at ways to improve them and deliver better service. Ontario roads consistently rank among the safest in North America. Our high safety and winter maintenance standards help keep all road users safe. We are committed to road safety and ensuring appropriate standards are met."
