Local Food Fund Recipients
Ontario's Local Food Fund supports innovative local food projects that create jobs, increase sales, stimulate new investment and increase awareness of and demand for foods and beverages that are grown, made and harvested in Ontario.
This year the following projects are being supported through the Local Food Fund:
Limestone Organic Creamery Ltd. will receive up to $43,349 for the purchase and installation of a cream separator and yogurt-maker that will enable the company to increase production and open new product lines.
Saugeen Specialty Grains will receive up to $200,000 to purchase and install modern steam flaking equipment. The new equipment will allow Saugeen Specialty Grains to process their own grains, as well as grains from other local farmers, into ready to use, readily available products.
The Gala Bakery Inc. project will support increased consumer demand for European pastries, especially burek and vanilla custard. The company has received $241,140 to purchase equipment that will help increase production, as well as a cold storage retrofit to improve capacity by 500 per cent. By 2016, Gala anticipates over 70 per cent growth in the number of locations where their products are sold.
Leaning Post Wines will receive up to $17,475 towards the purchase of equipment that will help expand winery capabilities, capacity and product offerings. Their market niche is terroir (location) driven wines with a focus on the grower and product history that features the unique qualities of specific local VQA wines. The project intends to create/retain a total of four part-time and full-time positions.
Sunnybrook Farm Estate Winery will receive up to $19,050 towards the purchase of wine production equipment that will help produce more apple cider and fruit wines, and help develop new beverages. The increased production will help the company expand into wholesale and export markets.
VG Meats Limited will receive up to $948,025 to help bring Ontario beef to more than 25 Longo's grocery stores. The funding will be used to purchase equipment for beef processing, as well as for customer friendly, leak-proof roll stock/tray packaging. The new packaging will maximize freshness, support traceability, contribute to a longer shelf life and will incorporate the Foodland Ontario logo.
Big Rig Brewery will receive up to $130,634.72 towards the purchase of a 30-barrel brewhouse system that will be able to pack 30 cans of beer per minute. This increased production will help Big Rig meet demand for local craft beer and will help leverage distribution channels like the LCBO, restaurants and bars. The company will also be purchasing more locally-grown malts, barley and hops. The project will create four full-time and two part-time jobs.
Perth Brewery Ltd. will receive up to $48,900 towards the purchase of brewing and packaging equipment that will help meet production demand. This project is part of a larger facility expansion. Perth Brewery uses locally grown products, and their mash by-product is used by local farmers as cattle feed. The project is expected to create/retain 50 full-time and part-time jobs.
Thunder Bay District
The Nishnawbe Aski Nation will receive up to $190,973 towards the development of a feasibility study and business plan that will look into ways of distributing Ontario grown foods through food hubs and other partnerships in the Nishnawbe Aski Nation territory and will support the creation of four new jobs. The project will bring together existing/emerging Ontario producers, First Nations, northern consumers and retailers to help rebuild NAN's current food system.
The Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance will receive up to $113,250 to support their "Feast ON - A Certified Taste of Ontario" multimedia marketing campaign. The campaign will help increase consumer awareness of Ontario food and beverages, recognition of local products, and will support Ontario's agri-food tourism.
St. Helen's Meat Packers will receive up to $597,570 towards the retrofit of two of its facilities, which will help in the production of new product lines such as boneless meat and pre-packaged products. The project is expected to create approximately 100 new full-time positions.
Longo's will receive up $446,138 to launch "Taste Ontario Too", an in store and online marketing campaign to help consumers learn more about local farmers and processors, the expansion of Longo's GroceryGateway.com e-commerce search functions for hand held devices, and a sausage program, where they will process their own fresh pork sausage.
Quality Cheese Inc. will receive up to $1,234,388 towards the purchase of leading edge cheese making equipment, including a pasteurizer, to improve market competitiveness and meet increasing consumer demand for their specialty and convenience products. The new technology will boost production and increase cheese products made using Ontario milk. The project intends to create 70, and retain 22, full-time and temporary jobs.
Villa Di Manno Bakery will receive up to $23,912 towards a traceability project that will track flour and other raw materials used in their production process. The project will allow a live flow of information, improving production efficiencies and client service relationships. The project is expected to create three full-time and two temporary jobs.
