Ontario Supporting the Revitalization of Downtown Hawkesbury
Province Investing in New Opportunities for Tourism and Economic Growth
Ontario is boosting the local economy and encouraging tourism in Hawkesbury by investing in a plan to revitalize the downtown area.
Through the Rural Economic Development program, the province is providing up to $9,989 to Le Centre Culturel Le Chenail, to develop a plan that will increase the number of visitors to the Hawkesbury area and outline the necessary steps to revitalize the town. The plan will be developed in partnership with the local Business Improvement Association.
The province is also investing $3,000 in the L'Ancienne prison de L'Orignal Old Jail to develop a plan to market Ontario's oldest penal institution, built in 1825, as a tourist attraction and training venue by promoting its historical importance and marketing the location for education, meetings and events.
Since 2003, the province has invested more than $187 million in almost 600 Rural Economic Development program projects, generating more than $1.2 billion in local economic activity as well as retaining and creating more than 37,000 jobs.
Supporting rural communities is part of the government's plan to build Ontario up and deliver on its number-one priority to grow the economy and create jobs. The four-part plan includes investing in people's talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province's history, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives and building a secure retirement savings plan.
- The province invests $14.5 million annually in the Rural Economic Development program to help rural communities and regions grow their economies, attract investment and invest in the skills of their residents. The Rural Economic Development program and the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund work together to support rural communities, businesses and organizations, helping them make an even greater contribution to the province’s success.
- Ontario is also supporting regional economic development through programs such as the Eastern Ontario Development Fund, the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund, and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.
